Tonight, as we do every year, the New Mexico Jazz Festival honors an outstanding musical figure on the New Mexico musical scene. Renowned trombonist, percussionist (congas, bongos, timbales, batá drums, as well as drumset and hand percussion), singer, composer, arranger and bandleader César Bauvallet is most widely known as the leader of Albuquerque's most popular 9-piece Salsa band, Son Como Son as well as the smaller group, Tradiciones. Originally from Cuba, César graduated from the renowned Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in Havana in 1981. He has been a music educator and professional performer for more than 30 years. He also teaches Outpost's extremely popular Latin Music Classes for youth and adults. Tonight he presents his Cuban Jazz Project which features a unique mix of talents and includes two fellow Outpost Jazz Education instructors, pianist, Jim Ahrend and tenor saxophonist, Kanoa Kaluhiwa. Also featured are Janet Harman (Son Como Son), bass; Victor Rodriguez (Salsa Suite, Son Como Son), bongos; César and Janet's son, Danilo Bauvallet who makes his debut on drums; and special guest and longtime friend of Cesar's, Raciel Tortoló (Team Havana), on congas. The project draws on each of its members' diverse musical experiences ranging from bebop to timba as they perform Bauvallet's inspired original compositions and dynamic arrangements of Cuban and jazz standards. As Bauvallet describes it, "This will not be your ordinary Latin Jazz concert!" $25/$20 Members & Students (no member passes)
