Tonight's concert by René Marie is presented at the African American Performing Arts Center as they kick off their 10th Anniversary Season. Award-winning songwriter, jazz vocalist, composer, arranger, theatrical performer and teacher, René Marie, who was last heart at Outpost at the 2015 NM Jazz Festival on the heels of her Grammy award nominated album, I Wanna Be Evil - With Love to Eartha Kitt, returns after her most recent release, Sound of Red (2017), which received a Grammy award for Best Vocal Album just this past February. Also listed on NPR's Best 50 Albums of 2017, Sound of Red is Marie's 13th album and her first to feature all original material. "These are songs of wisdom from the voice of a woman who has been through some tough times and who is now confident and happy to sing about them," wrote a reviewer. Rooted in the jazz traditions of Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other such leading ladies of jazz, Marie has earned a reputation as one of the most provocative risk-takers among today's jazz divaas. Her singular style incorporates elements of jazz, soul, blues, folk and gospel, and in the span of two decades, she has cemented her reputation as a bold voice for a wide variety of social advocacy causes, her body of work becoming "an exploration of the bright and dark corners of the human experience, and an affirmation of the the power of the human spirit." She will be joined by her longtime bandmates, Jon Chin, piano; Elias Bailey, bass; and Quentin Baxter, drums.
