Happy Birthday Arlen (actually May 7)! To celebrate, Outpost features our favorite multi-woodwind maestro in concert with some of his longtime musical friends. One of New Mexico's true jazz luminaries, Arlen Asher was born in 1929 in a small farming community in Missouri. He moved to Albuquerque in 1958 working as an award-winning producer and announcer for KNME-TV, KOB-TV and KHFM radio. He left broadcasting to establish a private woodwind studio in 1965 and has been teaching woodwind fundamentals and jazz improvisation ever since. In the 1970's, he formed the Arlen Asher-Bob Brown Quartet, which formed the basis of two jazz television series for KNME-TV, and a series of concerts that included guest artists such as trumpeter Clark Terry. In 1994, Asher joined drummer John Trentacosta's group, Straight Up. He has appeared on numerous CD's including his own 2002 release, Another Spring and Straight Up's Live Jazz in the Desert. A new CD, due for release this spring, will feature Asher on alto flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, and soprano and baritone saxophones. Recorded by engineer and singer-songwriter Scott Jarrett at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design studio, the project was produced by John Scanlan, owner of Verve Gallery of Photography in Santa Fe. At the young age of 88, Asher remains active as a performer as well as hosting, along with John Trentacosta, "The Jazz Experience" broadcast every Monday morning on Santa Fe Public Radio station, KSFR.  He'll be joined by Jim Ahrend, piano; Colin Deuble, bass; John Trentacosta, drums; plus special guests. $20/$15 Members & Students
