Three-time Grammy nominated tenor saxophonist, Donny McCaslin is one of the most striking young voices in jazz. He moves comfortably between mainstream modern, funky fusion, ballads, and his own experimental style. He has collaborated with Dave Douglas, Dave Binney, Gary Burton, Luciana Souza and Danilo Perez; performed with John Pattitucci, The Mingus Band, Pat Metheny; and has released 11 highly acclaimed albums. His latest, Beyond Now (October 2016), a highly anticipated tribute to David Bowie, was the result of McCaslin and his band having worked closely with Bowie on Bowie's final studio album, Blackstar (January 2016). Recorded nearly three months after Bowie's death, Beyond Now is deeply influenced by the band's extraordinary experience collaborating with Bowie: as McCaslin says, "It was like a dream except it was something I never could have dreamed of!" After a recommendation by composer-bandleader, Maria Schneider, Bowie, went to hear McCaslin and his group at the 55 Bar in Greenwich Village beginning a collaboration and friendship that lasted through the recording and up to Bowie's passing in January 2016. McCaslin's path to Bowie and Beyond Now can be traced back to his 2011 release, Perpetual Motion on which,in contrast to his previous acoustic projects, he went electric for the first time. Beyond Now documents "David Bowie's Last Band" as they were "processing both their grief and Bowie's distinctive impact." McCaslin notes that it was Bowie's fearlessness in crossing musical boundaries and genres in his music and life, and showing him the risks and rewards of having an uncompromising musical vision that inspired the record. Featured on the album and joining McCaslin tonight are Jason Lindner (Now Vs Now), keyboards; Tim Lefebvre (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Saturday Night Live), electric bass; and drummer, Nate Wood (who also plays guitar on the CD).$20/$15 Members & Students
