Trumpeter, Ralph Alessi, who hails from a renowned musical lineage ( hi father is classical trumpeter Joe Alessi and hi mother is opera singer Maria Leone) studied under the late legendary Charlie Haden at CalArts and after moving to New York, swiftly became a ubiquitous presence on the downtown scene. A frequent collaborator with notable musicians, Steve Coleman, Jason Moran, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane, and others, he has recorded seven albums of original compositions drawing on everything from post-bop to neo-classical. Jazz Times magazine wrote that Alessi has "drop-dead trumpet chops" and calls his music "as clean and airy and sophisticated and disciplined as post-modern progressive jazz gets." His latest project, The Baida Quartet, features pianist, Gary Versace; bassist, Mark Helias; and drummer, Gerald Cleaver, and was called "unstoppably inventive" by The New York Times. A member of the faculty of the Eastman School of Music and New York University, Alessi is the founder and director of the School for Improvisational Music, a non-profit entity that holds improvisational music workshops in New York City and abroad.
Ralph Alessi's Baida Quartet will also be performing at GIG Performance Space in Santa Fe (1808 2nd St) Wednesday October 29, 7:30pm
