ABQ artist Jenny Berry’s quirky, culturally subversive work utilizes imagery rife with retro-Americana and puts our idiosyncratic pop culture under her microscope. Beneath a candy coating of kitsch and nostalgia, her raw style and hard-edged melding of vintage, iconic imagery is at once powerfully evocative and comfortingly familiar.

Outpost’s Spring 2012 season opens with a tribute to the music of legendary guitarist, Charlie Christian who, though he died at the age of 25 (1916-1939), left an enormous legacy. Both as the house guitarist at New York’s Minton’s Playhouse and a member of the historic Benny Goodman Sextet, Christian led the transition from swing to bebop and pushed the electric guitar into the spotlight when it was in its infant stages. At the urging of bassist, Micky Patten, tonight’s all-star tribute ensemble was formed in February 2011 and features longtime Albuquerque resident and Los Angeles session guitarist, Michael Anthony; Grammy award winning trumpeter, Bobby Shew; and drummer, Cal Haines.

Tonight’s concert grew from a conversation between drummer John Trentacosta and multi-reed maestro, Arlen Asher, as they spun records by legendary baritone saxophonist, Gerry Mulligan. Asher said that he’d like to perform a piano-less trio concert featuring the baritone saxophone. Tonight, that great idea comes to fruition as Arlen Asher, appears on stage with just his bari sax plus Michael Glynn, bass; and John Trentacosta, drums. . Also on the bill, Brian Wingard, a modernist on both tenor and soprano saxophones, performs w. John Rangel, piano; Colin Deuble, bass; and John Trentacosta, drums.

Trio M is a collectively-led ensemble of three visionary jazz artists with extensive histories in numerous ensembles of their own and others. Comprising Myra Melford, piano; Mark Dresser, bass; and Matt Wilson, drums. “Unbound by piano trio conventions, the leaderless project erases distinctions between frontline and accompanist, requiring each player to shape the music’s flow as it unfolds. Born Michelle Johnston in Dallas in 1962, Michelle Shocked is the chosen name of a singer-songwriter known for her musical and political iconoclastic bent. She has explored a wide range of musical interests in folk, western swing, gospel, and blues with Texas roots. As a young feminist, she left Texas to travel Kerouac-style, and was caught up in the grassroots politics of the 1980s. Her musical career was ignited by a bootleg recording made in 1986 at a Kerrville Folk Festival campfire on a Sony Walkman. It was subsequently released in England as The Texas Campfire Tapes and went on to top the independent charts. Her latest, Soul of My Soul (2009), features an all-new set of originals.
