What We Live Four

with special guest: Saadet Turkoez
Sponsored in part by Pro Helvetia, Switzerland

What We Live is a San Francisco-based jazz & improvised music trio formed by bassist/composer Lisle Ellis in1994 with saxophonist Larry Ochs and drummer Donald Robinson. They become WWL4 when they are joined by a special guest— in this case the renowned Kazakh vocalist Saadet Turkoez (they performed with Wadada Leo Smith at the old Outpost Space in 1998; other guests have included Marilyn Crispell and Dave Douglas). Originally from Canada, Lisle Ellis has performed with the Cecil Taylor Unit and with Paul Bley among many others. His most recent release is Children in Peril on the Music + Arts label. As a member of the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Larry Ochs has made more than two dozen CDs and 30 tours to Western and Eastern Europe. He has performed with Terry Riley, Kronos Quartet, John Zorn, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith and many others. Since 1971, drummer Donald Robinson has worked with many of the renowned leaders in contemporary jazz including Oliver Lake, Cecil Taylor, John Tchicai, Raphe Malik and Anthony Braxton. Along with Ochs and Ellis, he was a member of the Glenn Spearman Double Trio from 1992. In 2003, WWL began their collaboration with Saadet Turkoez who was born in Istanbul in 1961, where her parents fled to escape the political pressures of the Chinese government upon the Kazakh people. Her parents worked to instill the rich oral and musical traditions of Central Asia in their daughter. At 20 she left Istanbul for Switzerland, where she first experienced an exciting new world of free jazz & improvisation. In addition to frequent solo concerts, Ms. Turkoez regularly performs with musicians such as Elliot Sharp, Eyvind Kang, Voice Crack, Peter Kowald, Gianni Gebbia, Michael Zerang, Ikue Mori, Mark Dresser and many more.
