Saudade plus John Maestas Quintet

bob

From the jazz of Pixinguinha, Jobim, and Joyce to the sensual rhythms of Cesaria Evoria and the Cape Verdean morna, the Albuquerque ensemble Saudade explores the music of Brazil with rhythmic renditions of the original jazz of Brazil to the 19th century choro, to the more contemporary sambas, bossas and tangos coming out of Brazil and surrounding countries today. The band which works regularly in numerous venues around the city, features Bob Gusch, woodwinds; Debra Orlofsky, vocals; Jefferson Voorhees, percussion; Michael Grimes, bass; and Tony Cesarano, guitar.

Albuquerque native and Outpost Youth Jazz Ensemble graduate, John Maestas, began studying the guitar at age 14, taking lessons with local teachers and mentors David Ostrovitz, Michael Anthony and Daniel Ward at Manzano High School. Clearly a rare talent, upon graduating in 2008, he was awarded a scholarship to the Chicago College of Performing Arts to study jazz. After a year, Lee Berk (former President of Berklee College of Music) offered him the opportunity to attend Berklee (in Boston) where he currently studies privately with renowned NYC guitarist David Gilmore. On break from his first year at Berklee, his concert at Outpost will feature original compositions plus a few compositions in the modern Jazz canon. Joining him will be Aaron Lovato, saxophone; John Rangel, piano; Asher Barreras, bass; and Julian MacDonough, drums.
