Resonance: Patti Littlefield-Mark Weaver Duo plus Equilibrio with Asher Barreras & Kanoa Kaluhiwa

A self-taught singer, Patti Littlefield performs all types of music from rock and R&B to bebop. She has worked as a studio vocalist in NYC and LA, as well as contributing to the music of New Mexico artists David Parlato, Pete Amahl, and Lewis Winn. In Resonance, she teams up with one of Albuquerque’s finest low brass players, Mark Weaver, for an unusual and experimental exploration of spatial sound: no chordal instruments, just tuba and voice, re-fashioning material ranging from standards to jazz and pop tunes to original compositions. Mark Weaver has been playing low-brass instruments since 1970, performing in a broad variety of creative ensembles in the Southwest and on the west coast. Resonance released their self-titled CD in 2008.

Equilibrio is a quartet whose concept, as they put it, “is based on balanced improvisation through the vehicle of original compositions written by its members.” Bassist, Asher Barreras, who says his music is influenced by the desert and mountains of New Mexico where he grew up, as well as by the oceans and forests of Maine, started playing professionally at 14. He has lived and studied in Barcelona Spain, and played throughout Europe and the United States. One of Albuquerque’s most accomplished and respected saxophonists, Kanoa Kaluhiwa has performed with a broad array of musicians locally, nationally, and internationally. In recent years he has been studying and exploring African rhythms and often can be heard playing the Djembe and the Mbira as well as saxophone. The quartet also features John Rangel, piano; and Julian MacDonough, drums.
