Ross Edwards’ Father Figures and Rick Fairbanks Quartet

featuring Pam Jackson & Arlen Asher

ross

Father Figures comprises a band of five friends in Brooklyn who make music that blends composition, improvisation, and electronics into something “wild, unclassifiable, and accessible.” The quintet formed in 2007, while the members studied jazz performance at NYU, and developed further under the tutelage of Wayne Krantz and Ralph Alessi. Their self-titled vinyl album is out on Museum People Records and they will be debuting new material for their concert at The Space, which is part of their first US tour. The group features Albuquerque native and Outpost Youth Jazz Ensemble graduate, Ross Edwards, piano; Jas Walton, tenor sax; Adam Schatz, tenor sax and effects; Spencer Zahn, acoustic bass; and Ian Chang, drumset.

Rick Fairbanks has been playing bass for over 40 years and has performed with Paul Horn, Carl Fontana and Anita O’Day. He first studied with guitarist, Jerry Hahn, in Wichita, and upon moving to Albuquerque in 1965 worked with pianist, Jim Trost, later joining with woodwind artist Arlen Asher, guitarist Bob Brown, and drummer Nick Luchetti to form a quintet that toured and played extensively in local clubs. Vocalist, Pam Jackson sang professionally with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. Her interest in singing jazz and standards led to her 1986 collaboration with Arlen Asher, Jim Trost, Rick Fairbanks and Bob Delich. She also contributed, along with Fairbanks, to Asher’s 2003 CD, Another Spring for which Jackson received a NM Music Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. Tonight’s quartet features Arlen Asher, reeds; Brian Bennett, piano; and Cal Haines, drums.
