Tia Fuller & the New Mexico State University (NMSU) Jazz Nonet
In the fall of 2005, the New Mexico State University jazz faculty received a grant from New Mexico Arts to bring jazz saxophonist Tia Fuller to New Mexico for a series of concerts and workshops/master classes. Outpost is honored to be a part of this effort. The NMSU faculty members have formed an ensemble modeled after the famous 1949 Miles Davis-Gil Evans “Birth of the Cool” Nonet which featured brass (including tuba and french horn), woodwinds; and rhythm section. Thus the NMSU Jazz Nonet features Rhonda Taylor, saxophone; Pancho Romero, trumpet; Nancy Joy, french horn; Allan Kaplan, trombone; Jim Shearer, tuba; Curt Warren, guitar; Erik Unsworth, bass, and Ricky Malichi, drums. Saxophonist/composer Tia Fuller is one of the fine young musicians on the scene today. She received her BA in music from Spelman College and received her Master’s Degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has studied with Wessell Anderson, Javon Jackson and Jesse Davis and has performed with numerous jazz luminaries including, Ed Thigpen, Mickey Roker, Joe Ford, Benny Powell, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Gerald Wilson Big Band and DIVA Jazz Orchestra. Her NM tour is part of a six- week residency at NMSU. Now living in NYC she has recently released her debut CD as a leader, Pillar of Strength, and her quintet has been featured at the prestigious Lincoln Center Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and numerous other venues. In the coming year she will also tour with the Ralph Peterson, Sean Jones, T.S. Monk, and Rufus Reid.
