Chief Sanchez and Round Trip & The Patty Stephens Trio

chief

Trumpeter Mark Alan Sanchez (AKA “Chief”) was born in Santa Fe to musician parents Ernesto Sanchez & Linda Dixon, who continue to be solid inspirational educators, practitioners and supporters. Chief played in the family band, La Familia, into his early teens, then in 1973 joined with local guitar virtuoso, Antonio Mendoza. He also played with local jazz legends Jesse Sawyer, Murray Cohen, Frank Chewiwie & many others. In college, Chief and his brother David, joined Black Jack Davey & His Friendly Band Of Pirates, played with Sidro’s Armada and freelanced around Las Vegas, NV. where he joined the pit orchestra at the Four Queens, played with Martha Reeves & The Vandelas, Frankie Avalon, Rich Little, Jump Jive & Wail & the legendary Earl Turner, and played extensively as a sideman. Chief recently returned to Santa Fe where he performs regularly at Tiny’s and other venues around town. Tonight he performs on trumpet and flugelhorn with Bert Dalton, keyboard; Colin Deuble, bass; and Cal Haines, drums.

Vocalist Patty Stephens has been active on the Albuquerque jazz scene for over 20 years and a public performer for nearly her entire life. Always maintaining a strong jazz sensibility, her voice has been featured on collaborations ranging from duets to big bands, and in projects ranging from childrens’ music to Brazilian sounds. Stephens has nurtured the voices and musical hearts of innumerable students and fans of all ages and abilities.  A member of The Brazil Project, she also teaches jazz-singing privately, is on the faculty of the New Mexico Jazz Workshop, and works for NDI-NM introducing singing to dancers. She also offers a program called  for families with young children to teach the lost art of community singing. Tonight she’ll be accompanied by Bert Dalton, piano; and Milo Jaramillo, bass offering an instrumental sparseness which, as she says, “… lends itself to unveiling the lyrics which I find to be my favorite poems.”
