Chris Potter's "Underground"
Saxophonist, Chris Potter returns to The Space, this time with the “Underground” project— his latest quartet featuring guitarist, Adam Rogers; Fender Rhodes player, Craig Taborn; and drummer, Nate Smith. Following on the release of his CD, Traveling Mercies, Underground utilizes sampling and electronic keyboards and marks a departure from previous Potter projects. “The idea that I had was to explore different ideas about American history and how they affect people living now. The whole point is to understand the present where there is electronica and music from all over the world influencing everybody… all sorts of different sounds that people are exploring.” Chris Potter is one of the bright young stars in jazz as both a leader and as a longtime band member of the Dave Holland Quintet with whom he has performed at the Space numerous times. He’s also toured extensively with Steely Dan and many more. The New Yorker Magazine said about him, “A tenorist whose lean melodicism can remind you of Joe Henderson at his craftiest, he employs his considerable technique in the service of music rather than spectacle.”
