Heralded as “a living landmark” and “one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists”, Rory Block has committed her life and her career to preserving the Delta blues tradition. Both traditional and innovative, her fiery and haunting guitar and vocal style redefines the boundaries of acoustic blues and folk. Aurora “Rory” Block grew up in Manhattan where The Village scene was a constant influence. Personal encounters with some of the most influential Delta blues masters of the 20th century (the Reverend Gary Davis, Son House, Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt) set her on her musical path and over the years, she developed her craft in the traditional manner of blues musicians. Since signing with Rounder Records in the early 1980s, Block has released numerous critically acclaimed albums of original and traditional songs, including many Robert Johnson covers. The recipient of five W. C. Handy Awards (for Traditional Blues Female Artist and Acoustic Blues Album of the Year), her latest release, Blues Walkin’ Like a Man, has been called “... otherworldly... downright sexy... posessed by that same indescribable spirit of the original Delta bluesmen...an absolutely mesmerizing tribute.” (Jim Hynes, ADC Media Guide) $25/$20 Members & Students. |
