The Doug Lawrence Group

doug

Always a favorite at The Space, the great tenor saxophonist, Doug Lawrence was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1956. He grew up in ABQ getting his start in his father, Tilden Lawrence’s band. He went on to study at North Texas State playing in the famed One O’Clock Lab Band, later moving to Las Vegas, NYC and Chicago. He has performed on six continents at every major jazz club, concert hall and festival in the world, and has recorded on over 100 albums. Among the artists he has performed and recorded with are Benny Goodman, Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan, Rosemary Clooney, Jimmy Cobb, Frank Wess, Buck Clayton, Billy Eckstine, and George Benson. Once again living in Albuquerque, he is on the road most of the year as lead tenor saxophonist of the World Famous Count Basie Orchestra— a chair that he has held since 1993— formerly filled by Lester Young, Hershel Evans, Don Byas, Eli “Lucky” Thompson, Bud Johnson, Buddy Tate, Illinois Jacquet, Wardell Gray, Paul Quinechette, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis. Quite a legacy! The quartet will also feature Brian Bennett, piano;
Mike Olivola, bass; and John Trentacosta, drums.
