Zakir Hussain & the Masters of Percussion
Sponsored by Nicholas Potter Bookseller & India Palace Restaurant

A dazzling display of drumming with virtuosi from India’s classical and folk traditions, this concert is under the direction of percussion legend Zakir Hussain, today’s pre-eminent tabla maestro and a chief architect of the world music movement. Truly an international phenomenon, Hussain is one of India’s most renowned cultural ambassadors and is responsible for bringing the tabla to a global audience. The foremost disciple of his father, the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha, he was a child prodigy who began his professional career at age twelve and was already touring internationally with great success by eighteen. His music and extraordinary contributions to the music world were honored in April 2009, with four sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall’s Artist Perspective series. He received a 2009 Grammy award for Global Drum Project, with Mickey Hart, Giovanni Hidalgo and Sikiru Adepoju and his most recent project, The Melody of Rhythm, featuring Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer was a 2010 Grammy nominee. For their current tour, The Masters of Percussion, which began in 1996 as an outgrowth of Hussain’s memorable tours with his father, features Zakir Hussain, tabla; his younger brother, Taufiq Qureshi on various percussion; Ganesh & Kumaresh, violins; Sabir Khan, sarangi; Sridar Parthasarathy, mridangam; Navin Sharma, dholak; and The Motilal Dhakis, percussionists and dancers from Bengal.
