Kate McGarry’s Less is More Trio

with Keith Ganz & Clarence Penn

kate mcgarry

Vocalist Kate McGarry draws on the music of her youth to inspire her—from the Irish tunes of her family’s roots to musical theater to pop songs. Her repertoire ranges from Brazilian standards to Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills and Ric Ocasek. Born in Massachusetts, she received a degree in African-American music from UMass. While living in California, she performed with Clark Terry and Hank Jones at the Monterey Jazz Festival. She moved to NYC in 2003 and has collaborated with Fred Hersch, Kurt Elling, and Maria Schneider.  Her 2005 Mercy Streets, was dubbed “one of the most important vocal albums of the year” and a 2008 trio CD, If Less is More…Nothing is Everything, garnered a Grammy-nomination for Best Jazz Vocal. Guitarist Keith Ganz has been the accompanist of choice for Harry Connick Jr., Luciana Souza, Gretchen Parlato and other vocalists. Percussionist Clarence Penn has worked with Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Jacky Terrasson, Dizzy Gillespie, Dianne Reeves, Cyrus Chestnut, and many others.
