Since arriving in New York in 1999, Israeli tenor saxophonist and clarinetist, Anat Cohen has established herself as one of the primary voices of her generation. Conversant in modern and traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango, and Afro-Cuban styles, she first emerged as part of the energetic Tel-Aviv jazz scene. After graduating from high school, she played saxophone in the Israeli Air Force band before moving to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music. There she immersed herself in the “world music” scene, playing klezmer, as well as Afro-Cuban music with saxophonist Miguel Zenon. She was introduced to choro music by flutist, Fernando Brandao and began playing in several well-known NYC Brazilian ensembles, including one led by drum master Duduka Da Fonseca. Anat Cohen also plays with her two brothers in The Three Cohens, has held the tenor saxophone chair in Sherrie Maricle's Diva Jazz Orchestra, and also plays the early jazz music of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet with David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band. She has released three CDs as a leader. The Quartet features Anat Cohen, saxophone and clarinet; Jason Lindner, piano; Joe Martin, bass; and Daniel Freedman, drums.

This project is made possible in part by a grant from the National Performance Network’s Performance Residency Program.
