Thursday, November 12, 7:30pm Kanoa Kaluhiwa SextetTribute to Wayne Shorter
Kanoa Kaluhiwa pays homage the music of the great saxophonist and composer, Wayne Shorter. As Kaluhiwa puts it: “The purpose of this tribute is to celebrate a great contributor to music. Yes, Wayne is known primarily as a jazz saxophonist, but like Miles Davis, Shorter has broken the box several times and continues to do so today. From Jazz Messenger to Native Dancer to Heavy Weather and Live Footprints, Wayne’s compositions alone, transcend the norm— never mind his flawless technique and undeniable sound on either tenor or soprano. Carefree-but-careful phrasing and irregular gymnastics on the saxophone, with a dose of soul, will always keep me interested in listening to Wayne.” One of Albuquerque’s most accomplished and respected saxophonists, Kaluhiwa has chosen collaborators culled from the best of Albuquerque’s jazz scene, to accompany him. As he said, “I know my arrangements are not always the easiest things to read or feel, but I also know these guys are up to the challenge.” They are Paul Gonzales, trumpet; César Bauvallet, trombone & percussion; John Rangel, piano; Luis Guerra, bass; and Diego Arencon, drums. $15/$10 Members & Students. |
