Ana Cervantes: Solo Piano Recital

ana

Tonight’s concert by Ana Cervantes is the second in an Outpost Series dedicated to music by Latin American composers and curated by pianist Fred Sturm who inaugurated the series in Spring 2009. Ana Cervantes, whose father was from México and mother from Nebraska, is a graduate of Bard College. Based in the city of Guanajuato, México, Cervantes maintains an extensive concert and teaching career. From 1999-2000 she was a Fulbright Senior Scholar in México developing a repertoire of contemporary concert music of México. Ms. Cervantes has spent the last ten years performing and premiering works of both Mexican and US composers in both of those countries, as well as in Spain, Cuba, and Brazil. Her most recent undertaking is Rumor de Páramo (Murmurs from the Wasteland) an international project in which she commissioned 23 composers from three generations and five countries to each compose a short work for solo piano inspired by the work of Mexican author and proto-magic realist Juan Rulfo. The result was two CDs— Rumor de Páramo in 2006 and Solo Rumores (Solo Murmurs) in 2007— which garnered worldwide recognition. Her performance tonight follows a residency at California Institute for the Arts which culminated in a REDCAT concert of Rumor music.

This concert made possible with support from the Consulate of Mexico.
