Thursday, October 1, 7:30pm David Binney Quartet
Acclaimed as a highly individual compositional talent and a technically brilliant saxophonist, David Binney was recently singled out by Jazz Times as “one of a handful of young players who have created an alternative jazz scene... all of whom are playing adventurous, original music.” Known for his work with the big bands of Gil Evans and Maria Schneider, as well as with Jim Hall, Bobby Previte and Cecil McBee, Binney was also a co-founder of the hard-edged quintet, Lost Tribe, and the open-form collective, Lan Xang. Awarded a grant from the NEA in 1989 to record his first album, Point Game, he has since recorded a dozen albums as leader on his own label, Mythology Records. He has appeared on recordings with Medeski, Martin & Wood and Uri Caine. “Dave Binney possesses one of the most original minds in contemporary music.” (Stereophile). With Craig Taborn, keyboards; Eivind Opsvik, bass; and Brian Blade, drums $20/$15 Members & Students. |
