CIRCUS LUMINOUS
featuring Wise Fool New Mexico & Moving People Dance Theater
with an original musical score by BING
Rodey Theatre University of New Mexico
presented in partnership with Wise Fool New Mexico
Circus Luminous is a unique circus creation mixing professional circus acts with modern dance and an original score performed live on stage. The magic and wonder of traditional circus from the turn of the century comes to life through a 20-foot tall handpainted set. Dancing dogs, graceful aerial acts, daring displays of fearlessness, and an acrobatic Can-Can number are just some of the acts that will delight the senses and appeal to both the young and old. This “spectacular spectacular” brings circus to a new level— “mixing a hint of Moulin Rouge with a splash of comedic genius.” Based in Santa Fe New Mexico where they have presented sold out performances at The Lensic: Santa Fe’s Center for the Performing Arts for 2 years running, they are now taking the show beyond the limits of “the city different.” Circus Luminous features over 10 stupendous acts created and performed by Wise Fool New Mexico with an original musical score by BING and choreographed and danced by Moving People Dance Theatre. Wise Fool New Mexico is a nonprofit theatre arts project created and staffed by women artists of diverse backgrounds who are dedicated to art as a means of changing our world. For over 12 years Wise Fool has been creating original works for theatres, schools, libraries and parks to rave reviews and sell out audiences. Moving People Dance Theatre, a nonprofit contemporary dance company, based in Santa Fe, NM is committed to showcasing broad spectrums of dance styles to the community and to educating interested students with quality professional training.
Co-founded by composer-performers Molly Sturges and Chris Jonas, BING creates ecstatic trance music that is a confluence of grooves and sounds from many diverse sources worldwide. A BING melody might be derived from American rhythm-and-blues, filtered through harmonies based on an Indonesian scale from Java and then set to the pulsating rhythms of early 70s Ethiopian pop music. The Santa Fe Reporter calls Circus Luminous.... “Entrancing… exhilarating… an ensemble of ludicrously gifted women … with its penchant for graceful acrobatics, surreal tricks and subtle drama... a bit like a Santa Fe version of Cirque du Soleil.” —Santa Fe Reporter
