Lauren Camp & John Rangel: Counterlines + Diego Arencon Quartet

Part spoken word, part improvised music, the Camp-Rangel Duo moves around and between lines in a set of reflexive listening, poetry, and musical conversation. Lauren Camp and John Rangel have collaborated on several stages in Santa Fe. Tonight’s set will be devoted to floating words, adding to them, and blending the rhythms of music and language. To poet and visual artist, Lauren Camp, every experience can be molded into sound, color and shape. As one listener said, “Lauren’s poems are the stuff of dreams and nightmares.” She has been published in The Sow’s Ear, Hotel Amerika, and Sin Fronteras. Each Monday morning, she hosts “The Colors of Jazz” on KSFR 101.FM, where she combines jazz and poetry in a glorious mix. Composer and pianist John Rangel has been a professional musician for twenty years – writing, playing, touring, producing and educating. His roots are in jazz and classical music, but he expanded his experience and musical direction in the rich vibrant culture of Leimert Park while living in Los Angeles.

The Arencon Quartet performs a mixture of musical influences brought to the group by each of the members. These include Flamenco, Jazz, Salsa and Classical. They also play original compositions and arrangements by the group members. Drummer Diego Arencon began his career at the age of fourteen as a percussionist in a flamenco ensemble led by his father “El Pelete.” He toured with his father for five years during which time he was also exposed to jazz by his mentor, drummer Peter Amahl. Arencon has performed with many jazz artists, including Frank Morgan, Doug Lawrence and Jeannie Bryson and has been an active musician on the Albuquerque Jazz scene as a leader and a sideman for the last 12 years. He has been performing with pianist John Rangel and bassist Luis Guerra for two years and as he puts it, “we share the passion of improvising over different forms of music without categorizing or labeling.” Percussionist Camilo Quinones joins the group for this concert, adding his distinctive Afro-Caribbean sound to the ensemble.
