The Cal Haines Trio with John Proulx + The John Proulx-Bobby Shew Quintet

The Cal Haines Trio is Lewis Winn on electric guitar, Michael Glynn on bass,
and Cal Haines on drums. Joining the trio for this concert is Grammy-winning L.A.based pianist and vocalist, John Proulx, with whom they have just released a CD entitled, The Bright Side. Cal Haines has been a professional drummer for more than forty years. He has performed with Diahann Carroll, Bob Hope, Richie Cole, Emily Remler, Al Green and Clark Terry. The Cal Haines Trio reestablishes his longtime association with guitarist Lewis Winn with whom he played in the ‘80s and ‘90s in the Real Time Quartet. As a professional performer and teacher of guitar and bass for more than 30 years, Lewis Winn has been a featured artist with Max Roach, Eddie Harris, Richie Cole, Jack Walrath, and the Jon Gagan Quartet. Classically-trained bassist Michael Glynn moved to Albuquerque from the Pacific Northwest in 2006 to complete his Masters in Bass Performance. In addition to performing with countless local musicians, Michael has appeared with such jazz legends as Bud Shank, Don Lanphere, Bob Florence and the Cab Calloway Orchestra.

John Proulx visited New Mexico in October of 2008 to perform with Bobby Shew for the memorable Chet Baker Tribute performances in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. He recently toured with Natalie Cole and has accompanied Anita O’Day and Marian McPartland. Nancy Wilson recorded Proulx’s composition, “These Golden Years,” earning him a Grammy. World-renowned, Grammy award winning trumpeter Bobby Shew, grew up in Albuquerque. Early in his career he toured with the Tommy Dorsey and Woody Herman bands as well as with Della Reese and Buddy Rich later moving to Las Vegas, NV and then on to Los Angeles where he played with Art Pepper, Bud Shank, the Horace Silver Quintet, and the big bands of Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin, Louie Bellson, Benny Goodman, and Maynard Ferguson. Shew recently returned to live in Albuquerque, and now leads the seventeen-member Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra and, when not touring worldwide, makes guest appearances with many local jazz performers.
