at The Lensicpresented by New Mexico Jazz Festival
Sponsored by Eisbach Facial Plastic Surgery, PC

Paquito D’Rivera is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. Born in Cuba, D’Rivera began his career as a child prodigy. A restless musical genius during his teen years, he created various original and ground-breaking musical ensembles, including Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, which he directed for two years, and the innovative Cuban supergroup, Irakere, which introduced an explosive, never before heard mixture of jazz, rock, classical and traditional Cuban music to a worldwide audience. D’Rivera also played clarinet and saxophone with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra with whom he premiered several works by notable Cuban composers. The first artist to win Latin Grammy awards in both Classical and Latin Jazz categories, D’Rivera is an NEA Jazz Master, winner of nine Grammy Awards, and is recognized as “one of the premier reed stylists of the last 30 years” (JazzTimes). D’Rivera’s highly acclaimed ensembles—the Chamber Jazz Ensemble, the Paquito D’Rivera Big Band, and Paquito D’Rivera’s Funk Tango Quinte—are in great demand world wide. He has recorded more than 30 solo albums in jazz, bebop and Latin music while his contributions to classical music are equally impressive. He has soloed with the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Baltimore Symphony, among others. In 1991 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Carnegie Hall for his contributions to Latin music. The National Hispanic Academy of Media Arts and Sciences also paid tribute to Mr. D’Rivera, along with Dizzy Gillespie and Gato Barbieri, with their Annual Achievement In Music Award for his “outstanding body of work”. “[D’Rivera] has become the consummate multinational ambassador, creating and promoting a cross-culture of music that moves effortlessly among jazz, Latin, and Mozart.” (National Endowment for the Arts). Paquito D’Rivera’s Funk Tango Quintet features Paquito D’Rivera, on saxophone; Diego Urcola, trumpet; Alexander Brown, piano; Massimo Biolcati, bass; and Mark Walker, drums.
