One of the most influential jazz artists of his generation, alto and soprano saxophone titan Kenny Garrett has been a major force in jazz since his first appearances as a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers as well as Miles Davis’ band nearly twenty years ago. As one of the last great musicians to work his way up the ranks in the bands of his mentors, Garrett attributes much of his success to his work with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Mel Lewis Orchestra and Dannie Richmond Quintet as well as with artists like Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw and, of course, Miles Davis. Garrett joined Miles Davis’ last touring band in 1986 and played and recorded with Davis for five years. But he cites John Coltrane as having the most influence on his artistry. Garrett has released numerous acclaimed recordings and has received multiple Grammy nominations. A frequent critics’ and readers’ poll winner, most of his work is in modern mainstream idioms, but he is an eclectic artist having experimented with fusion and hip-hop as well as performing with the New Jersey Symphony, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Pharoah Sanders, John Scofield, and Pat Metheny. Appearing with Garrett at this year’s festival is his latest touring group featuring the young talents of Hammond B-3 organist Corey Henry; electric bassist Lenny Stallworth; and drummer Justin Brown. Focusing on his funk roots, Garrett’s current band is “incredibly youthful…armed with impressive technique…coiled excitement in the extreme.”
