The unique guitarist/vocalist Josh Hanna was born in Surrey, England. At fifteen he joined the Navy and traveled the world for six years returning home to England to begin his performing career. In 1966, he had a hit on the British charts with “Sweet to My Soul,” on the Decca label. Hanna worked the British club circuits with such people as Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, and Engelbert Humperdink and led a band called Basic Truth that toured England extensively. In 1973 he once again set sail as a ship’s musician with the Pacific Orient Lines coming to the US in 1975. He settled in Hollywood where he became a studio session musician, while writing and performing his own music. In 1983 he wrote the theme, “Olympiad,” for the 1984 Olympic Games and learned to play “The Stick” under the wing of its inventor, Emmett Chapman, appearing on Chapman’s first album. In 1986, he took to the road and, for six years, lived in a motor home, opening for the likes of Ray Charles, Tower of Power, Tania Maria, Freddie Hubbard and Leon Redbone. In 1992, Hanna moved to Nambe, New Mexico, and set up Redman Dream Trees (RDT) recording studios. To this day, he records and composes while still remaining active on the national and international jazz festival circuits, as well as occasionally appearing locally in New Mexico.
The Brazilian ensemble, Saudade, is the most recent project of guitarist Dan Golden and woodwind player Bob Gusch. Saudade (pronounced “sow DAA jee”), focuses on the rhythmic renditions of 19th-century choros, as well as contemporary sambas, bossas and Argentinean tangos. Dan Golden has spent over 35 years in recording studios, pit orchestras, nightclubs and fine restaurants in Kansas City, Seattle, L.A. and Albuquerque. His credits include performances with the Mills Brothers, Bobby Vinton and Frankie Lane. Bob Gusch has been a mainstay of the Albuquerque music scene for the past 25 years. He has backed such international greats as Clark Terry, Dianne Reeves, and the Temptations, and has performed locally with the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra and the Outpost Repertory Jazz Orchestra. Saudade also features Blake Minnerly (who has led and played in numerous unique Albuquerque bands such as Jasper, Mucho Buddha and Red Earth) and Lenore Gusch— both on percussion.
