The Jeff Brown Trio
Pianist Jeff Brown is one of a group of young Albuquerque-based jazz explorers, who are interested in experimenting with new approaches to the music. Brown was recently awarded artistic residencies at the Banff Centre in Canada (where he studied and played with such leading jazz innovators as Dave Douglas, Han Bennink and the ICP Orchestra of Amsterdam) and the Fondation Royaumont in France and for the past four years has held a Composer-in-Residence position with the Santa Fe Opera. He also performed as part of Anthony Braxton’s large ensemble at the UNM Composer’s Symposium in 2004. Equal parts jazz pianist and classical pianist, he brings a diverse background to his music. He began his life in music late (at age 27) after graduating from Northwestern University and working as a business consultant. He dedicated himself to classical studies with renowned pianist Awadagin Pratt and Brazilian master Luis Carlos de Moura Castro and has since been featured as solo recitalist and chamber musician in South America, Europe and the U.S. He more recently studied with Paul Badura-Skoda, Vitaly Margulis and Boris Berman and appeared as a classical soloist in Obidos, Portugal in August 2007. As an improvising musician, Brown performs regularly around New Mexico. He returns to Outpost with a trio featuring two former Albuquerque residents and fellow explorers, bassist Asher Barreras, who now studies at the University of North Texas; and percussionist Brandon Draper, who lives, teaches and performs in Kansas.
