Luis Guerra & John Rangel:
The New Mexico Conscious Collective

Tonight, bassist, Luis Guerra and pianist, John Rangel debut their new collaborative project —The New Mexico Conscious Collective—presenting new compositions which meld jazz, African, and Latin musics. Luis Guerra was born in San Antonio, Texas. He picked up the bass at 14 and began playing jazz professionally at the age of 16. He has played with Kevin Hays, Felipe Vieux, Jason Marsalis, Doug Lawrence, Tosca Tango Orchestra, Barrett Martin, Charanga Cakewalk and Terremoto. Besides jazz, his musical interests encompass the music of Latin America, Africa, drum n’ bass, and electronica. He has spent time in Cuba, Peru, Canada, Spain, and Mexico where he has absorbed much of the culture and music into his own sound. Pianist/composer John Rangel has been a professional musician for twenty years. He grew up in New York City where he studied composition with John Corigliano and jazz piano with Joanne Brackeen, Kenny Werner, Stanley Cowell, Richie Beirach, and Phil Markowitz. Recently relocated from Los Angeles to Santa Fe, he has been part of L.A.’s thriving Leimert Park jazz scene (recognized as the center of the African-American arts scene much like Central Avenue which preceded it) since 1995. He has worked with a wide range of artists from Nat Adderly to Sam Rivers, Ravi Coltrane, Pharaoh Saunders, Ernie Watts, Sam Most, Tony Dumas, Blay Amboley and His Afrikan Jazz Band, Tierney Sutton, Rosemary Clooney and Billy Higgins and has performed worldwide. The Conscious Collective will also feature, longtime collaborators, Diego Arencon, drums; Hillary Smith, vocals; and others.
