Anat Cohen Quartet

Tenor saxophonist and clarinetist, Anat Cohen has established herself as one of the primary voices of her generation since arriving in New York in 1999. Idiomatically conversant with modern and traditional jazz, classical music, Brazilian choro, Argentine tango, and Afro-Cuban styles, she first emerged as part of the energetic Tel-Aviv jazz scene and has since played throughout the world. After graduating from high school, she played tenor saxophone in the Israeli Air Force band for two years before moving to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music. There she immersed herself in the world music scene, playing in klezmer bands, as well as Afro-Cuban music with bassist Alex Alvear and saxophonist Miguel Zenon. She was introduced to choro music by Brazilian flutist, Fernando Brandao and began playing in several well-known NYC Brazilian ensembles, including one led by Brazilian drum master Duduka Da Fonseca. In addition to her Brazilian music and her own quartet, Anat Cohen also plays with her two brothers in The Three Cohens, and has held the tenor saxophone chair in Sherrie Maricle’s Diva Jazz Orchestra. She also regularly plays the early jazz music of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet with David Ostwald’s Gully Low Jazz Band. Her three CDs under her own name have all earned widespread acclaim. Accompanying Anat Cohen in this concert will be her regular band comprising Gilad Hekselman, guitar; Joe Martin, bass; and Daniel Friedman, drums.
