Tetragon
The hard bop and Afro-Cuban jazz group, Tetragon was formed in 1991. Their influences include Art Blakey, Woody Shaw, the “Cubop” innovations of Dizzy Gillespie & Chano Pozo, Eddie Palmieri, and folkloric Afro-Cuban rhythms. Some of Tetragon’s recent performances include the First Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival, the Albuquerque Museum Amphitheater, and the Telluride Foundation’s “Family Fiesta” concert in Mountain Village, CO. A native of Albuquerque, Paul Gonzales has been active in the New Mexico jazz scene as a performer and teacher for several years. A student of trumpeter Bobby Shew and former New York City Opera trumpeter, John Trujillo, he also studied jazz improvisation with Bob Barnes (a student of Lennie Tristano & Kenny Dorham). In the 1990’s, Gonzales co-led Tetragon, was a member of Salsa Suite and appeared at the 1992 Telluride Jazz Celebration with Caribe. He has played with the Platters, the Pete Escovedo Orchestra, Doug Lawrence, Dan Trudell and Donald Walden and has shared the stage with Bobby Shew, Greg Abate, Alan Pasqua, Howard Alden, and Ali Ryerson. A member for 12 years of the Cuban-styled salsa band Son Como Son and the Santa Fe-based jazz group Straight Up, he has also performed and recorded with guitaist Ottmar Liebert appearing on Liebert’s platinum-selling CD, Little Wing. Gonzales’ first CD as a leader, Warm Valley, was released in 2003. He currently teaches trumpet and jazz improvisation and is a clinician with various middle and high school bands. He is also a DJ on KUNM’s Monday afternoon All That Jazz program. Besides Gonzales, Tetragon is Steve Figueroa, piano; Kanoa Kaluhiwa, tenor saxophone, Cesar Bauvallet, trombone and percussion; Michael Olivola, bass; and Tomas White, drums, timbales and percussion. $15/$10 Members.
