Michael Anthony’s Natural Instincts Trio
opening: Outpost Advanced Youth Jazz Ensemble
Michael Anthony’s Natural Instincts Trio features three of Albuquerque’s finest jazz musicians: guitarist Michael Anthony; bassist David Parlato; and drummer, Andrew Poling. “The music of Natural Instincts,” says Anthony, “varies from traditional jazz standards to Latin heat to swinging blues and originals to odd meter adaptations and free-form avant-garde moods.” During his fifteen years working in Los Angeles recording studios, Michael Anthony has played with Blue Mitchell, Hubert Laws, Jerome Richardson, Tommy Flanagan, Richard “Groove” Holmes, the Louie Belson Orchestra, and Quincy Jones, and with the Gil Evans Orchestra accompanying Miles Davis at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Anthony has recorded four CDs under his own name and, since moving to New Mexico in 1980, he has been one of the most respected and sought after guitarists on the scene. Bassist, composer, bandleader and educator, David Parlato grew up in Los Angeles where he was active for many years in all facets of the music business including recording, live television, concert and club dates, teaching, and playing with numerous renowned popular music and jazz artists. Since moving to Albuquerque in 1990, he has continued to teach privately and is the Outpost Jazz Education Coordinator. He has been the founder and leader of several groups including The Jazz Chamber Ensemble, and the 17-piece Outpost Repertory Jazz Orchestra (ORJO). As a sideman he is one of the most respected and in-demand musicians in New Mexico. Drummer, Andrew Poling has performed with Clark Terry, James Newton, Alan Pasqua, Kenny Davern, Howard Alden, Dianne Reeves and Bruce Dunlap and is arguably the most recorded drummer in the state. Poling, who performed often with the late Linda Cotton, currently performs locally with Sid Fendley and Solstice and teaches private lessons at his home studio. Tonight, Natural Instincts celebrates the release of their new CD, Nostalgia. Opening the evening will be the talented Outpost Advanced Youth Jazz Ensemble which meets weekly, thirty weeks a year, under the direction of Outpost Jazz Education Coordinator David Parlato.
