Guy Klucevsek
The Well-Tampered Accordion

presented in partnership with Santa Fe New Music

Accordionist, Guy Klucevsek has created a unique repertoire for his instrument which includes his own compositions as well as commissions from composers such as John Zorn, Fred Frith, Alvin Lucier, Mary Ellen Childs, William Duckworth, Somei Satoh and many bothers. Tom Strini of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal describes Klucevsek’s music as “a musical orient express whose themes pass from Hungarian gypsy to Slovenian waltz to Middle Eastern wail without stopping at the borders.” He has performed and/or recorded with Laurie Anderson, Anthony Braxton, Bill Frisell, Fred Frith, Robin Holcomb, The Kronos Quartet, Natalie Merchant, Pauline Oliveros and John Zorn and was an original member of Dave Douglas’s band, Charms of the Night Sky, with whom he recorded two albums. Klucevsek has performed on Broadway and around the world both as a soloist and with his group, Ain’t Nothin’ But a Polka Band. In 1987, he commissioned Polka From the Fringe, a collection of 32 post-modern two-steps by composers such as Carl Finch, Fred Frith, and Elliott Sharp. He later formed the Accordion Tribe, an international line-up of composer/accordionists. They have released two recordings and are the subjects of the Stefan Schwietert documentary film, Accordion Tribe: Music Travels, which was released in theaters across Europe in 2004-2005 and was featured at film festivals in North America. Klucevsek has released seventeen recordings as a soloist/leader and he can also be heard on John Williams’ scores for the Steven Spielberg films, The Terminal and Munich.
