Bobby Shew Quintet
featuring Gary Foster
Outpost Performance Space (Albuquerque)
Sponsored by Southwest Gastroenterology Associates, PC
Trumpeter Bobby Shew, who grew up in New Mexico and recently moved back here (joining the list of notable jazz musicians living in New Mexico such as Eddie Daniels, Dave Grusin, Kevin Hays, James Newton, Doug Lawrence, and more) is one of the jazz community’s most in-demand clinicians and concert soloists. Well-known for his fiery bebop trumpet, he has performed and recorded with the elite of the jazz world for over three decades. A member of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, he also played with the Woody Herman band, and the big bands of Della Reese and Buddy Rich. He became a prominent performer in Las Vegas for many years and later moved to Los Angeles where he played with Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Horace Silver, as well as the big bands of Bill Holman, Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin, Benny Goodman, and Maynard Ferguson. Shew has recorded many of his own albums, one of which, Heavy Company, was awarded a Grammy for Jazz Album in 1983. In addition to a busy performing and private teaching schedule, Shew is actively involved in conducting clinics and master classes at high schools and college campuses all over the world. He has been active on the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild, and has acted as National Trumpet Chairman for the International Association of Jazz Education for 16 years.
Joining Shew tonight is another long standing Los Angeles musician, Gary Foster on saxophone and flute. “An excellent, cool-toned straight-ahead altoist influenced by Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh. Gary Foster’s years in the studios have often been underrated despite his talents.” Shew and Foster will be joined by a third Los Angeles musician who has called New Mexico his home for many years and who often worked with Foster in LA, bassist David Parlato; as well as Stu MacAskie, piano; and John Bartlit, drums.
$20/$15 Members. Available in advance, by phone or in person, at the Outpost Performance Space (268-0044)
