Sama’ Duo: Mustafa Stefan Dill
& Jefferson Voorhees
Patti Littlefield & Mark Weaver Duo

Summer Thursday Jazz Nights
Sponsored by Southwest Gastroenterology Associates, PC

Beyond the status quo of most world music projects, the Sama’ Duo retains an improvisational focus, combining a deep core of cutting-edge and ancient improvising methods applied within the musical traditions of India, the Middle East, and free improvisation. The group takes as its name a nuanced Arabic term that describes the spectrum of relationships between intense listening, sprituality, and music-making itself. They have forged a distinct sound where Middle Eastern maqams may develop as ragas and vice-versa; melodies float through on rhythms from India, d’n’b, funk and bhangra; and nestled within forms based on Persian ensemble, Indian classical, or Qawwali structures. Mustafa Stefan Dill (sarod, fretless guitar, oud) is well known leading a variety of his own ensembles, as well as for his work in mJane, Out of Context, Zevk Ensemble, and others. He has performed solo concerts at numerous improvised music, jazz, and guitar festivals. Jefferson Voorhees (tabla, naal, tar) resides in Albuquerque and is one of the region’s most versatile and sought after percussionists. His resumé includes such projects as the Tom Guralnick Trio, Bayou Seco, Stove, and Out of Context, among many others. He has spent time spent in India studying music and percussion.

A self-taught singer, Patti Littlefield covers all types of music from country to bebop, from jazz to blues to Broadway. She has recorded songwriters demos for Ken Hirsch, Teddy Vann, Billy Cioffi and the late Doc Pomus, and has sung in studio with Luther Vandross and Joni Mitchell. She has worked locally with musicians such as David Parlato, Mark Weaver, Dan Dowling, Peter Cover, Lewis Winn, and has also participated in several projects with poet, Mark Weber. She joins forces with one of Albuquerque’s finest low brass improvisors, Mark Weaver, for an unusual and experimental exploration of spatial sound— no chordal instruments; just tuba and voice. Mark Weaver has been playing low-brass instruments since 1970. He has performed and recorded in a wide range of ensembles including brass quintet and concert wind ensembles, jazz bands, folk and blues bands, free improv and new music groups, conduction ensemble, poetry+music group, pit orchestra, and many non-categorizable ensembles. He is currently a member of The Rumble Trio, Selsun Blue, and his own unique brass n’ drums quartet, Brassum and has also performed in ensembles led by Michael Vlatkovich, Malcolm Goldstein, J.A. Deane, Rob Blakeslee, David Parlato, Jack Manno, Dan Clucas, Biggi Vinkeloe, Chris Jonas, and Ben Wright.
