The artistry and virtuosity of Michel Camilo bridges the genres of jazz, classical, popular and world music. A native of the Dominican Republic, Mr. Camilo is a pianist with brilliant technique and a composer who flavors his tunes with the spice of Caribbean rhythms and jazz harmonies. A chart-topping producer, star of the documentary, Calle 54 (the film about Latin jazz by Academy Award-winning director Fernando Trueba) and a Grammy, Latin Grammy and Emmy award winner, Camilo has recorded over 10 CDs, including Live at the Blue Note; Solo, his highly acclaimed and first solo piano recording; and his latest, Spirit of the Moment, featuring his trio. A highly versatile pianist, he has appeared as soloist with many major orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Copenhagen Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Madrid and Barcelona Symphonies, New Japan Symphony and the Carnegie Hall Big Band performing his own compositions, as well as thos of George Gershwin and Maurice Ravel. He also performed at the White House in an all-star program celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival. As a composer, Mr. Camilo has received several commissions, including his “Rhapsody for Two Pianos and Orchestra,” commissioned by the Philharmonia Orchestra and premiered by Katia and Marielle Labèque. His “Concerto for Piano & Orchestra,” commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra, was performed as part of the first Latin-Caribbean Music Festival at the Kennedy Center, for which he was also the co-artistic director with Leonard Slatkin. He was the musical director of the Dominican Republic’s Heineken Jazz Festival for five years. He regularly tours the Caribbean, Europe, South/Central/North America, Israel and Japan and gives duo concerts with Flamenco guitarist Tomatito, with whom he won a Latin Grammy in 2000 for their album Spain.
