Out of Context
SoLoDiNo: J.A. Deane

In 1997, Out Of Context, directed by J.A. “Dino” Deane, presented its first public concert. In the ten years since, OOC has released four critically acclaimed recordings. OOC continues to push the boundaries of Conducted Composition and continues to create ensemble music of great depth and beauty—completely in the moment. Out of Context is J.A. “Dino” Deane, conductor; Jon Baldwin, cornet; C.K. Barlow, sampler/live sampling; Matt Deason, electric bass/electronics; John Flax, text; Katie Harlow, cello; Sam Rhodes, bassoon & voice; Joseph Sabella, vibes & percussion; Carlos Santistevan, acoustic bass; Bonnie Schmader, alto flute; Alicia Ultan, viola; and Jefferson Voorhees, drums, percussion.

Opening the evening will be SoLoDiNo, a solo sampler performance by J.A. “Dino” Deane. Dino has been doing live sampling since the early 80’s when he began to look for a way to create large soundscapes to support dances by choreographer Colleen Mulvihill. He was drawn to the portability of “walkman” cassette players and 4 track cassette recorders, over the years evolving along with the technology itself. He strives in every performance to get past the technology, whatever the form, straight to the heart of the music. As he puts it, “Improvising in real time on sampler is like being a juggler and an abstract painter all at the same time, only with sound.”
